Starting a Pilates Practice

Starting a Pilates Practice

Getting started can often  feel like the hardest part when it comes to Pilates.

Pilates can be a vague concept. Questions I get most often are, should you start by yourself at home or with a teacher? What is better group classes versus private sessions?

Hopefully I can bring some clarity to any questions you might have and the many options that are out there when it comes to starting Pilates.

My primary recommendation would be to start with a teacher in person or virtually. The most ideal scenario would be to take in person private or small group (5 people or less) sessions in a physical Pilates studio. Can’t make it to a studio? Almost every Pilates teacher these days offers virtual sessions as well.

Practicing with a teacher allows the teacher to guide you according to what your body needs and give you options that are right for you. When practicing in person with a teacher  you will often get physical assistance to help guide your body to get the most of an exercise. A teacher can help you avoid building negative patterns in your your Pilates practice and help you understand the exercise better and speed up your progress. Not ready to commit to a studio/teacher yet? The good news is that there are so many online options that you can use to start your  Pilates practice from the comfort of your own home.  You can choose from paid services like the Lowimpact virtual studio, or free services like You Tube. A quick search should bring up lots of amazing Pilates teachers. Try several platform options before settling on the one that is the best fit. Start with beginner sequences before progressing to more intermediate and advanced routines. Tap here for a list of virtual classical Pilates options.

However you choose to start be it virtual or in person, the most important part is taking that first step and just getting started.
